Koh Lipe, THAILAND
Koh Lipe, or Ko Lipe often dubbed the “Maldives of Thailand,” is a tropical paradise perfect for families with young children. With its crystal-clear waters, soft sandy beaches, and laid-back vibe, it’s an ideal destination for parents traveling with kids under 3.
Why Koh Lipe is Great for Families
Koh Lipe is small, walkable, and safe, making it easy to navigate with little ones. The island’s calm, shallow waters are perfect for toddlers, while its relaxed atmosphere ensures stress-free family time. Plus, many accommodations and restaurants cater to families, offering high chairs, kids’ menus, and cozy spaces.
One thing you may not consider when booking an island holiday with little kids, is that it's more difficult or not possible at all to do some island activities, most of which are via speedboat. For example, diving, day trips, etc. We personally don't feel comfortable taking our kids on speedboats. We have been lucky enough to do this prior to having kids, so we are happy to enjoy the slow life on the private beaches.
We also love Krabi in Thailand, however that is a little more weather dependant getting to nearby beaches and islands. Everything is right at your doorstep on Koh Lipe. Krabi blog coming soon.
Koh Lipe is a wonderful destination for families looking to balance relaxation and adventure. With a little preparation, your trip can be stress-free and filled with beautiful memories. Whether it’s your toddler’s first dip in the ocean or a peaceful family stroll on the beach, Koh Lipe offers experiences you’ll treasure for years to come.
Getting to Koh Lipe with Young Kids
1. Fly into Hat Yai or Langkawi (Malaysia).
2. From Hat Yai, take a van or taxi to Pak Bara Pier, then a speedboat to Koh Lipe. Most people do Langkawi option.
3. If coming from Langkawi(we personally recommend!), hop on a direct ferry from Telaga Harbour International Terminal to the island. Book well in advance! The ferry from Langkawi to Ko Lipe operates from mid October until mid May.
4. Pack snacks, toys, and distractions for the journey to keep your little one entertained during transit as it takes approximately 1.5hours.
Important to note - you may be waiting outside for a little while to board the ferry, with minimal shade, coming from both directions, so keep hats, sunscreen and water handy. It can get very hot! Most people are very considerate and offer the best spots for people with small children.
Ferry
• We booked with this company as recommended by others and we were happy with our experience.
• Secure your ferry tickets early, especially during high season (November to April). Choose morning ferries when kids are likely to be in a better mood.
• Choose the Right Ferry:
Speedboats: Faster but bumpier—better for short trips if your child doesn’t mind the ride.
Ferries: Slower but steadier, ideal if your little one needs a nap.
Arrive Early: Arrive at the pier at least 30 minutes before departure. This gives you time to settle in and manage unexpected delays.
Motion Sickness Remedies: Pack child-safe motion sickness bands or medicine if your child is prone to nausea.
Safety Gear: Many ferries and speedboats don’t provide life jackets for kids, ours did. Bring your own toddler-sized life jacket for peace of mind.
Prepare for Wet Transfers: At Koh Lipe, passengers often transfer to the island via longtail boats. Wear sandals and pack a dry bag for essentials to keep them safe from splashes.
Where to Stay
Look for family-friendly resorts along Pattaya Beach or Sunrise Beach, which offer easy access to the ocean and shaded lounging areas. Some great options include:
Anda Lipe Resort: Our pick! Steps from white sands and clear waters, Anda Resort’s Balinese-style villas occupy the peaceful southern end of Sunrise Beach. The resort also has a restaurant and beach bar, with amazing food and cocktails! We would take turns staying in the hotel room for their naps, which is just a short stroll off the beach front. The other parent gets to enjoy solo drinks on the beach.. perfection!
• Castaway Resort: Beachfront bungalows with extra space for families.
• Mali Resort Sunrise Beach: Quiet and perfect for relaxing naps by the shore.
Kid-Friendly Activities on Koh Lipe
1. Beach Time: Spend the day on Sunrise or Sunset Beach, where the water is calm and the sand is soft—perfect for toddler play.
2. Island Hopping: Opt for a private longtail boat tour to nearby islands like Koh Adang. Short trips ensure your little one doesn’t get restless. Bring a life jacket for your child, as they may not always be available.
3. Snorkeling: While your toddler may not snorkel, they’ll love splashing in the shallow waters and watching colourful fish near the shore.
4. Evening Strolls: Visit Walking Street in the evening for local food and a fun, lively atmosphere. Many vendors offer fresh fruit shakes and kid-friendly snacks.
What to Pack for Toddlers
• IMPORTANT - Keep packing minimal as you will be coming via boat, so you want to make things easier by having less to carry.
• Baby sunscreen and sun hats
• Lightweight stroller or baby carrier (for walking around)
• Reusable swim diapers, bucket and spade, beach toys.
• Toddler-safe mosquito repellent
• Snacks, sippy cups, and familiar toys
Dining with Little Ones
Koh Lipe offers plenty of family-friendly dining options, although we loved the food at our hotel so much we ate there most meals. Most restaurants are casual and welcoming to kids much like everywhere else in Thailand.
• Elephant Bar & Restaurant: Great for international options and kids favorites like pasta.
• On the rocks: Beautiful setting overlooking the crystal clear waters, perfect for sunset.
• The Box: Offers kid-friendly seating and smaller portions.
• Local Food Stalls: Perfect for trying fresh fruit or grilled seafood.

Immigration Tips for Koh Lipe
If arriving directly from Langkawi, you’ll need to go through Thai immigration on Koh Lipe. Here’s what to expect:
1. Location:
• Immigration is handled on Pattaya Beach, quite literally on the sand. Passengers disembark onto the sand, so be prepared to carry luggage and children. If you have a hotel transfer booked they will carry luggage for you. The sand was hot so our transfer staff even offered to carry our toddler!
2. Documents to Prepare:
• NOTE - The ferry staff will take your passports off you when you board, they will be returned to you once you are at Koh Lipe immigration office - they will call your name to come to the counter. You will need to line up when you leave Koh Lipe, but arriving there you just wait for your name to be called. We were called first, I think they prioritise babies and small children.
• Valid passports for all family members, including babies and toddlers.
• Visa or entry permit (if required based on nationality).
• Completed arrival/departure cards. Most ferries provide these during the trip.
• Proof of onward travel (if applicable).
3. Arrive Early:
• Immigration lines can be long, especially during peak season. Arrive early to avoid long waits with an impatient toddler. You will literally be waiting on the beach with bars and cafes nearby so you can get cold drinks while you wait.
4. Keep Snacks Handy:
• Immigration can take some time, so keep your child calm with snacks and small toys while waiting.
5. Use a Baby Carrier:
• The sand and crowds can make navigating with a stroller challenging. A baby carrier keeps your hands free and makes the process smoother.
6. Be Patient:
• Immigration officers are usually friendly, but the process may be slower than at airports. Smile, stay calm, and be prepared for delays.
